Keisha had told me that she didn’t feel welcome at KHASA functions. I reserved judgement.
But, sometimes, you just get a feeling. Like everybody there thinks that all the black children there are yours. And I’m not just talking about people you don’t know–this is people I do know, that know what my children look like. . .
And the subtle snubbing the children receive from others–kids telling my very polite, well-mannered four year old to ‘cut that out!’ just because she was going down the slide.
Or telling my timid, friendly 5 year old not to cut. She didn’t even know what cutting was! And would never dream of jumping in front of some other child in line!
This is definitely why I started my own group. Thank God for my peeps!

You have a playgroup in the Kalamazoo area? If so what are the ages of the children and how does it all work. I asked because in the midst of considering preschool for my 3yrold daughter I came across your webpage (keyword: Looking Glass Preschool). I was trying to get reviews for the school after to speaking with the director there this morning. Its been really hard considering any school in this area when I don’t have the word-of-mouth to depend on from parents I know. This would be going on my second year in Kalamzoo, and although I’ve met parents with children the same age as my 7yrold, besides my neighbor I haven’t put myself out there to meet parents with kids the same age as my youngest daughter. Since I didn’t see any reponses I thought I’d appeal to you for some advice to the area’s preschools.
