I’m all late on this one, but I thought I’d weigh in on the Duggar’s newest addition.
For those who’ve never heard of Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar, they are an Arkansas couple with 19 children. They have TLC show, 19 Kids and Counting, which has got to be the only reason I miss cable. The show follows the family through typical days to big events.
I love to follow this Christian family. Their attitude about children is so refreshing in this world. Rather than view them as burdens and nuisances, the Duggars understand that children are a gift from God.
I was sad to hear that they had trouble with baby #19. I know that serial pregnancy is not for the faint of heart or the poor of health. Unfortunately, Michelle had pre-eclampsia, (pregnancy induced high blood pressure) with her last baby, and was forced to have an emergency C-section in order to save the baby’s and her lives. The baby was born 15 weeks premature, weighing a little over a pound in December. She now weighs over two pounds, so that is good news.
Her parents expect baby Josie to stay in the hospital until her due date in March.
Having had my own NICU experience, my heart goes out to the Duggars. I can’t imagine subdividing myself among 18 children at home and 1 in the hospital. Pumping milk for a tiny preemie as well as taking care of little ones at home would be enough of a challenge.
But Michelle’s home organizational skills are legendary. She has an 18 year old daughter who is enormous help, along with the buddy and chore system the family has set up at home. It must be a life-saver for them during this trying time.
Everyone likes to weigh in on the Duggars. Most believe they’re some kind of crazy. I think they are amazing. And having and caring for this preemie really puts their money where their mouths are. I’m sure they were told that the baby would endanger the mother’s health. And I’m just as sure that abortion was out of the question.
Now they have a preemie in the NICU. I know that really tests your faith. Yet they are loving on their tiny daughter, believing she will come home to her family soon.
The Duggars are an inspiration. I wonder if they were told it would be too risky to try another pregnancy. I wonder if they did, would they ignore the warning. What do you think about the Duggars?

Angela, I love the Duggars. I have followed their story for years and it never ceases to amaze me. 19 children is a lot but they are gifts from God and who can refuse such wonderful gifts. We just had our 8th child 2 months ago and she is loved beyond measure.

I didn’t know of her troubles. I should have read first instead of responding based on the title. I will keep their family in my prayers.

Thank you for that positive article! The Duggars is for me like you one of my main reasons for subscribing to cable TV. It is so great to see a family who have standards that they live up to and pass on to their children. The kids are growing up learning not only to share with each other but with others less fortunate in the world. I also think having the older ones help care for the little ones as well as do home chores is just fine and good training for life. Remember, until that oldest girl was eleven or twelve almost all of the chores and housework fell on Michelle and she managed just fine and trained her daughters in the process. Now they are great helpers and will make great mothers and homemakers. We need more people like this in our country.
