I remember bumping into a couple we knew at the video store. We were fairly new to homeschooling, and they were a hipster trendy couple who prided themselves in being in the know. They asked us various questions about what was going on, and when I answered something about homeschooling every time, they responded with, “Homeschooling is its own subculture, isn’t it?”
I was offended, because I was so enthusiastic about homeschooling, and I expected my enthusiasm to be infectious. I thought they’d eventually want to homeschool too, because why wouldn’t anybody, after they knew how amazing homeschooling was?
As my children have gotten older, I’ve been thinking about their future spouses, and how the next generation will be settled. I look around at my homeschool subculture, and I see people doing things in an orderly fashion. Kids are meeting while pursuing group projects, like putting on a play, or starting a movie production company, or playing sports, and some of them are pairing up. Young homeschool graduates are marrying each other, starting families.
The culture is growing. I would be surprised if these young parents someday decide to put their children in school. Why would they? Their culture has everything they want and need. I would like to see this culture grow bigger and bigger, until it’s no longer a subculture, but the culture. I am excited about what the future holds for this bold group of pioneers.
What is the fruit of homeschooling in your area?

You know, this is so true. Homeschooling is more than a subculture now. It is huge and only growing by leaps and bounds. What was taboo only 10 years ago will soon become so very commonplace…or at least we can only hope
